Players that make up the pages of Real Madrid’s history | Raúl
Raúl is a name that is synonymous with Real Madrid. A canterano since 1992, Raúl is the definition of a Real Madrid player. For the most part of the last decade, he was Real Madrid. He embodied all of Real Madrid in his captaincy, which was passed onto him in 2003 by another true leader before him, Fernando Hierro. Former Real Madrid coach Fabio Capello said that Raúl “is the inheritance of Real Madrid” and his teammate Luís Figo added “I think he is the greatest player to have ever played the game. He walks on the turf and he astounds. It is utterly amazing”.
A setter of records both domestically, internationally and in Europe, Raúl is a player that many young talents from Real Madrid’s youth teams look up to and try to emulate. A class act on and off the pitch, his lethal scoring ability and humble nature gained him many admirers amongst fans and in the football community. Sir Alex Ferguson said in 2003 that “the best player in the world is Raúl” and seven years later he still wanted to bring El Ángel to Manchester United.
While Real Madrid did not give Raúl the sending off he deserved in 2010, Raúl will always remain a part of Madridismo. A part of history. A part of Real Madrid. Perhaps the only fitting thing the club did offer Raúl was a slogan on the official website, which said “Symbol of Madridismo”.
